Leonforte peaches
Intense bouquet, golden color and naturally fragrant and tasty flesh - that's the Leonforte peach, a niche product from Sicily, which was able to convince during the past 30 years, those who have tried it.
What makes the peach Leonforte different from other peaches? It is the maturing phase in September. During this time, the peaches are still hanging on the tree and are stuck in a paper bag. This procedure was invented in the 60s by a certain Pappalardo di Acireale, who wanted to protect his peaches from pests. In the 50s in Leonforte the peach growing was started but already a short time later abandoned due to pest infestation.
The antidote came a few years later: paper bags, which are put 120-150 days before the final maturation of the fruit on the peaches to ward off pests. In this way poisons and artificial fertilizers can be omitted.
This practice rapidly was established and peaches from Leonforte became famous.
Growing area: The late peach Leonforte, also called Settembrina, is grown in Leonforte, Enna, Calascibetta, Nissoria Assoro and Agira.
The IGP designation protects the peach of Leonforte from imitators.
