Merk: Vini d'annata
Vineyard Ceretta, Conterni, Merli, Vignane
Technical datas
1998 was a very normal year in terms of temperature and rainfall during the summer, while the early autumn was quite warn and sunny with very little rain and these conditions favoured the ripening process.
Harvesting began at Ceretta on the 4th of October and ended at Vignane on the 19th.
Harvest
October 4-19
Vinification
Each vineyard was vinified separately. After destemming and light crushing, must is "sealed" with CO2 for gentle warm maceration of approximately a day. Alcoholic fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later from native wild yeasts only.
Maceration: Gentle maceration in upright open-top steel tanks for the first 5-8 days of the alcoholic fermentation
Malo-lactic Fermentation: Immediately after alcoholic fermentation in French oak casks with a capacity of 500l.
Alcoholic Fermentation: 28-30 days.
Aging: 24 months in French oak tonneaux of 500l, followed by 18 months in bottle.
Blending: Summer 2000
Bottling date: 22 December 2000
Tasting note:
February 2012: This moderately dark-colored Le Vigne shows layers of dense berry and cherry fruit, with licorice and balsam notes and hints of vanilla on the nose. 1998 gave us a relatively warm growing season in relation the the early 90s but was not as hot as 1997, so this wine shows the fruit flavor density of the warmth but has good acids to keep it fresh and lively. On the palate, this has just entered its plateau of maturity and we think it will drink well for at least another decade. Red currants and black cherry predominates on the tongue, with licorice and minerals. The tannins are well-integrated and have softened considerably since bottling. The finish is long and pure.
