History The Primitivo denomination derives from the early ripening of the grapes. Its origins are uncertain, perhaps a native of Dalmatia and imported to Puglia by the Illyrians more than two thousand years ago. To corroborate this thesis, for some authors, Primitivo would be identical to the Croatian grape variety, Plavac Mali and even more to the Zinfandel originating from Hungary and subsequently brought to California and Australia.
